Chalfont St Peter is one of the villages closest to our yard, and it is a regular part of our weekly diary. The village centre keeps a core of older brick and flint property around the church and the High Street, and around it sit interwar and post-war semis, later detached housing on Gold Hill and Austenwood, and larger properties on the lanes towards Chalfont St Giles and Jordans.

Most of what we do here is domestic: roof strips and re-roofs, chimney rebuilds, fascia and gutter renewal, full re-renders, loft conversions, rear and side extensions and solar installations. Because so many of the houses have been extended over the years, bridging over conservatories, single-storey returns and flat roofs is a normal part of the setting-out.

The village also sits in the Misbourne valley, which means some low-lying plots have soft ground and some hillside plots have a serious fall across the base. Both are dealt with at the site visit — spread loads, stepped bases and proper sole boards — rather than discovered on the erect day.
