Scaffolding hire and erection in Windsor

Windsor is fifteen minutes from our yard and it is one of the more demanding towns on our patch, for reasons that have nothing to do with distance. The historic core is dense with listed buildings, conservation areas and narrow streets carrying constant pedestrian traffic. A scaffold that would take an afternoon on an open plot in Bracknell needs planning, licensing and a different fixing approach here.

That suits us. ATC Scaffolding does a lot of work on old buildings — Georgian and Victorian frontages that will not take aggressive tying, brickwork and stone that has to be protected rather than drilled through wherever possible, and streets where the scaffold has to keep a public footpath open and lit. We use free-standing and buttressed configurations, non-invasive ties and protection to every surface the scaffold touches.

Away from the centre, Windsor is a mix of Victorian and Edwardian terraces through Clewer and Dedworth, post-war semis, and substantial detached houses towards Old Windsor, Eton Wick and the Great Park fringes. We cover the lot — roof strips, chimney work, temporary roofs, extensions, solar and commercial façade access.

Local knowledge

The property and sites we scaffold in Windsor

Knowing the building stock is half the job. This is what we are usually working on in and around Windsor.

Listed and conservation-area frontages

Peascod Street, the streets around the castle and much of central Windsor are protected. Fixings are minimised, ties are designed out where possible, and every contact point is padded and boarded.

Clewer and Dedworth terraces

Standard terraced access problems — no rear vehicle route, shared party walls, and load-in through the property. Planned properly at the visit rather than improvised on the day.

Old Windsor and Great Park fringe properties

Large detached houses with long gravel drives, mature planting and expensive landscaping. Sole boards, load spreading and a tidy site are non-negotiable.

Town centre retail and hospitality

Shopfronts and hotels where the business has to stay open. Pavement gantries, protected walkways and out-of-hours erection where the licence requires it.

What we are called out for most in Windsor

Roof strips and chimney work

Full edge protection with a boarded working lift, chimney lifts where the stack is being rebuilt or repointed.

Temporary roofs

Essential on Windsor's older properties, where an exposed roof structure cannot be left to the weather.

Façade repair and repointing

Full-height access with the boarding set at the right heights for the mason, and debris protection to the street below.

Pavement gantries and public protection

Where footfall has to continue underneath the works, with lighting, signage and hoarding as required.

Local conditions

What catches people out in Windsor

Ground, access, building age and the local licensing regime all change how a scaffold has to be built and booked.

Highway licences and pedestrian flow

The Royal Borough is strict about scaffolding on Windsor's footways, and rightly — the town is busy year-round. We manage the licence and design the structure so people can still walk past safely.

Event and tourist season restrictions

Central Windsor has periods where deliveries and road access are heavily restricted. We plan erection and dismantle windows around them so a wagon is not turned away at the cordon.

Fragile masonry and no-drill requirements

On listed frontages we assume no drilling until proven otherwise, and design a stable structure that does not rely on it.

FAQs

Scaffolding in Windsor: common questions

The questions we get asked most by homeowners, builders and contractors in Windsor.

Can you scaffold a listed building in Windsor?+

Yes. We build regularly on listed and conservation-area property, using non-invasive or minimal fixings, protective padding at contact points and free-standing or buttressed designs where tying in is not acceptable.

Will you handle the scaffold licence with the Royal Borough?+

Yes. Where a scaffold sits on the public highway or footway we deal with the licence application to the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead and factor the timescale into your start date.

Do you work in central Windsor during the day?+

Where the licence and the street allow it, yes. Where it does not — busy retail frontages, restricted access windows — we erect early or out of hours instead.

How far in advance should I book?+

For a straightforward domestic job in Windsor, a week or two of notice is usually plenty. For licensed highway scaffolds allow longer, because the council's processing time sits outside our control.

Whether it is a listed frontage on Peascod Street or a roof strip in Dedworth, we will come out, look at it and price it properly. Free visit, written quote, no obligation.
